MAY 2021
Mental Health Month

In many ways the past year felt like the ultimate personal stress challenge. In the beginning of the pandemic, it was hard for me to stay motivated and focused. It was so easy to fall into a sedentary lifestyle. The news, fear of the virus, social injustices, was I going to work again, and how will I connect with my classes? Too many depressing thoughts invading my head! I call it the “carousel” brain. Once it starts, it’s hard to quiet the cycle of circular thinking, but that’s exactly what we have to do: Find a way to break it!

Here are some of the things that served me well in difficult times….

of COVID-19 has been extremely stressful. Now as we move forward, take a deep breath, we will see that there’s a bright future on the other side of this pandemic.

Let’s do this!

  1. Plan your days. I love my calendar! Last year, pre pandemic, my daughter gave me a calendar with quotes to motivate me each month. It guided me with a daily, weekly, and monthly plan to stay concentrated on my goals for the year. Once your intentions are set for the day, you’ll have a more positive outlook when those goals are accomplished.
  2. Gratitude. Expressing gratitude daily has been an important habit, especially in times of chaos. It helps me focus on what I do have rather than everything I do not have. It also shifts my mindset and I feel more joy and optimism!
  3. EXERCISE. Move your body every day. The CDC recommends 150 minutes of exercise a week for increased longevity. Exercise is a natural mood enhancer, decreasing feelings of depression. It produces changes in parts of the brain that regulate stress and anxiety. It also increases serotonin and norepinephrine which relieves feelings of sorrow. Additionally, exercise increases the production of endorphins, which are known to help produce positive feelings, no matter how intense it is. Walking my dogs during the “stay at home orders” was a priority, but I knew it wasn’t enough to challenge my muscles. I continued to desire more, leading to the inspiration to go live on Instagram, and learn to teach online classes. I look forward to my movement time with my online community!

I don’t think many would disagree with me, this year of COVID-19 has been extremely stressful. Now as we move forward, take a deep breath, we will see that there’s a bright future on the other side of this pandemic.

Let’s do this!

Always Rooting for you,

Teri
